DEI is Our Responsibility

Ignited and Emboldened by K-Dot

Kendrick Lamar's Super Bowl halftime performance was more than just a dazzling spectacle; it was a powerful act of art activism, resonating deeply with themes of Black pride, resilience, and the ongoing struggle against systemic racism.

... it was a call to action, demanding a reckoning with the systemic issues that continue to plague our society.

His performance, a tapestry of intricate choreography, compelling visuals, set design and poignant lyrics, served as a potent reminder of the power of art to ignite social change. This resonates strongly with the mission and values of CONTRA-TIEMPO, an LA-based activist dance studio that uses dance as a tool for social justice and anti-racist work. As Kendrick said, “This is bigger than the music.” Just as CONTRA-TIEMPO's physically intense and politically astute performances move audiences to imagine what's possible, Kendrick used his platform to amplify Black voices and experiences on a global scale. Both utilize art not just to reflect the world but to actively shape it. Kendrick's performance, like CONTRA-TIEMPO's work, challenged viewers to confront their own biases and consider the realities of racial inequality. It wasn't simply a celebration of Black culture; it was a call to action, demanding a reckoning with the systemic issues that continue to plague our society.

This call to action, this demand for justice, extends beyond the specific experiences of the Black community. While Kendrick's performance centered Black narratives and celebrated Black culture, it also implicitly acknowledged the interconnectedness of struggles against oppression.

The demonization of DEI

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) is vital to America's past, present, and future. The US is a nation built by diverse people, and celebrating this diversity is essential to our identity and strength. Our history demonstrates the profound, often overlooked contributions of marginalized communities. Embracing DEI rectifies past injustices and unlocks our full potential, fostering innovation, creativity, and deeper understanding. DEI is key to a just, prosperous, and harmonious future where everyone thrives, and our differences are celebrated as strengths.

What Is Anti-Racism?

Anti-racism is a movement that seeks to challenge and dismantle the systemic forms of racism and prejudice that exist in society. It involves taking active steps to challenge discriminatory attitudes and behaviors, and working to create a more just and equitable society for all.

It’s not just about rejecting individual acts of discrimination, but recognizing the ways in which racism is woven into the fabric of society, and taking action to challenge and change these structures and systems. This includes examining and addressing the ways in which institutional policies and practices perpetuate inequality, and working to create a more inclusive society where everyone has equal opportunities and rights.

Racism and prejudice have a long history of causing harm and division, and have been used to justify a wide range of injustices, including slavery, segregation, and ethnic cleansing. Anti-racism is key to fighting this. It’s also a matter of human dignity and justice. Racism dehumanizes those who are targeted, and creates barriers to their full participation in society. By promoting anti-racism, we can work toward a world where we are all valued and respected as human beings.

The fight against racism is not a singular battle; it is interwoven with the struggles of other marginalized communities, particularly communities of color. Solidarity is vital to dismantling oppressive systems. While centering Black narratives, the performance acknowledged the shared struggles against systemic oppression faced by other communities of color, echoing CONTRA-TIEMPO's commitment to inclusivity and intersectionality. This understanding that the fight against racism requires solidarity across communities is crucial for effective social activism. It recognizes that while experiences of racism may differ, the underlying systems of power and oppression often operate similarly, targeting various groups. Just as CONTRA-TIEMPO strives to create a space where diverse stories are told and celebrated, Kendrick's performance, within its celebration of Black culture, left room for the acknowledgement of these shared struggles, implicitly promoting the importance of coalition building and mutual support.

The revolution is about to be televised, you picked the right time, but the wrong guy.

Yes, the Drake diss continued in this halftime performance. However, the bigger vision, the primary message, was more of a diss to the American elite. How can you engage with this work and become a rhythm rebel, a champion for change? You start here:

  • Self-Reflection and Education: The performance prompts us to examine our own biases and assumptions. An excellent resource is "The Antiracism Handbook: Practical Tools to Shift Your Mindset and Uproot Racism in Your Life and Community." Written by two psychologists, this book is a comprehensive guide to understanding and combating racism in all its forms. The authors emphasize the importance of self-awareness and reflection, and provide guidance on how to actively work to unlearn internalized biases and challenge discriminatory beliefs and behaviors. Just as CONTRA-TIEMPO encourages self-discovery through dance, anti-racist work begins with introspection.

  • Supporting Art Activism: Organizations like CONTRA-TIEMPO demonstrate the power of art to drive social change. Donating to and supporting such initiatives directly fuels their work in creating performances that challenge, inspire, and move audiences to action. Attending performances and engaging with the art itself is another powerful form of support. Arts organizations especially now need your support! Connect, buy tickets, and show up with a friend!

  • Amplifying Marginalized Voices: Kendrick's performance gave voice to experiences often marginalized in mainstream media. We can all contribute by actively listening to and amplifying the voices of those most impacted by systemic racism. This includes sharing their stories, promoting their work, and advocating for their inclusion in decision-making processes.

  • Demanding Systemic Change: Art can raise awareness, but lasting change requires policy reform. Engaging in advocacy, contacting elected officials, and supporting organizations working to dismantle systemic racism are essential steps. Just as CONTRA-TIEMPO uses dance to challenge existing power structures, we must use our voices to demand a more just and equitable society.

  • Building Community and Solidarity: The fight against racism is not an individual endeavor. Building relationships with people from diverse backgrounds, engaging in cross-cultural dialogue, and participating in community-based initiatives are crucial for creating lasting change. Just as CONTRA-TIEMPO fosters a sense of community among its dancers and audiences, we must all work to build bridges and foster solidarity across different groups.

Kendrick's Super Bowl performance, alongside the ongoing work of organizations like CONTRA-TIEMPO, serves as a powerful reminder that art can be a catalyst for social change. Here at CONTRA-TIEMPO, we proudly showcase diverse stories, crew, and performers in our work. As a Los-Angeles-based activist dance studio, we have a responsibility to represent diversity in our art, and it’s a responsibility we are thrilled to meet. By working to challenge and dismantle systemic forms of racism and prejudice, we can create a society that values and respects the unique contributions and perspectives of all its members, and ensures that everyone has the opportunity to thrive and reach their full potential.
